OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) - The town owned golf course in Oak Island is costing taxpayers' money.

The town took over ownership of the South Harbour Golf Links course in 2007, but it's losing money due to the high cost of maintenance and turf management.

Last year, it cost the town about $100,000.

The problem is the contract states that the property cannot be anything except a golf course for 35 years.

Several property owners have expressed their concern with the golf course not generating enough revenue.

The town is forming a committee to improve turf management techniques and market the course to a larger demographic.

The ad-hoc committee will be headed by Councilwoman Carol Painter. It should start working in February.
