Lenoir Rhyne Football team heads to Alabama

Posted: Updated:

School has been out for more than a week, but there was still a pep rally-type atmosphere at Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory Wednesday morning.

With cheerleaders chanting and a crowd cheering, the University's football team boarded buses en route to Florence, Alabama with a date in the NCAA Division ll National Championship game.

"Go Bears!" shouted coach Mike Houston as he boarded the lead bus.

The team had a record of 13-1 this year but will have to defeat the undefeated Northwest Missouri State team on Saturday to claim the national title.

"We're ready," said players as they prepared to leave.

More than a hundred people gathered to say goodbye and Houston thinks the outpouring will help energize his players. "I've never seen anything like this!"

It has been more than 50 years since a Lenoir Rhyne football team has been in the national title game.
