ORANGEBURG – The Coastal Carolina men's basketball team's comeback effort came up just short Tuesday night as the Bulldogs of SC State University downed the Chants 83-78. CCU trailed by as many as 20 points in the game but was able to cut the lead to just two late in the period.

The Chanticleer offense effort was led by junior Josh Cameron who had a team-high 22 points and four assists. Junior Warren Gillis chipped in 16 points and a team-best four steals. The final Chant in double-figures was freshman Elijah Wilson who extended his double-digit scoring streak to 11 games. Wilson had 10 points.

The Chants record falls to 5-6 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 3-7.

The Bulldogs used a physical defensive effort to slow down the Chanticleer attack in the first half as SC State built up an 18-point halftime lead, 43-25. The Chants had 10 turnovers in the period and shot just 38.5 percent from the field. SC State also dominated the boards in the first stanza 20-14.

The Chants outscored the Bulldogs 53-40 in the second half but it was not enough to overcome the 18-point halftime deficit. CCU shot 50.0 percent from the field in the second half and tied the Bulldogs in rebounding 19-19. SCSU was held to just 37.0 percent shooting in the second stanza.

Coastal will be back in action this Saturday, Dec. 21 as the Chants travel to Central Connecticut State University for a 1 p.m. game.
