Cops play Santa in Morganton

Three year old Sam Rosebrock has had an eventful year. "We've been battling cancer," said his mom Danielle. "Seventy-eight trips to Charlotte for Doctor visits and surgery and checkups."

It's been hard on the family, which includes Sam's brother, who is in third grade, and his mom and dad. "We felt like they could use some cheering up," said State Highway Patrolman Greg Gentieu.

He was among more than a dozen local law enforcement officers who loaded up gifts to take to four families on Tuesday. "They don't know we are coming," said the Trooper.  In fact, families nominated to take part in what's called Operation Blue Christmas sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police, have no idea they have been selected.

The officers have a family friend take the family out of the house for shopping or some other reason. While they are gone, the officers sneak into the home, put a tree up if necessary and fill the area with presents for everyone in the household, then leave before the family gets home.

Tuesday morning, that's just what they did at Sam's house.  When he and his mother came back home just before noon they were shocked by the multitude of gifts around the tree in the living room.

"I'm just so overwhelmed," said Danielle. "Let's open them all" said Sam with more than a little excitement to his voice. The only clue as to who left all the gifts was a framed photo of a group of law enforcement officers from Morganton, the county and the state.

"I'm so grateful for all they've done for us," said Sam's mom.  Despite all the chemotherapy, radiation and surgery he has endured, Sam is doing quite well she says. "His cancer is in remission and that's what we wanted for Christmas."

They got that wish and now with a roomful of presents for everyone, Danielle said this is one Christmas the family will never forget. "Thank you very much," said Sam.
