Grave relocation project moving forward

Work could soon begin to relocate dozens of unmarked graves from Evansville's east side to Oak Hill Cemetery.

The relocation project is moving forward so the city can build a pedestrian overpass over the Lloyd Expressway.

On Monday, Evansville's City Council approved $275,000 to relocate 70 unmarked graves near the Lloyd and Vann Ave to Oak Hill Cemetery.

Bodies buried there are believe to have been patients at the state mental hospital around 100 years ago.

City Engineer Pat Keepes said work is expected to begin very soon and it could last a few months.

City Councilman Jonathan Weaver said once the project is finished, the overpass will connect nearby parks.

These parks include Wesselman Woods, the future Roberts Park, and the old state hospital.

The city will ask for bids for the $2.1-million project in about a year.

There was talk of trying to identify some of the remains, but Keepes said due to the nature of the remains, identification will be very difficult.
