Ramsey: It's time for wine in grocery stores bill to pass

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Will Tennesseans soon be able to buy wine in grocery stores?

It's been debated time and time again, but it looks like lawmakers will vote on it yet again next session.

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey said he thinks the wine in grocery stores bill will finally pass during the next legislative session.

Grocery store chains and supporters in the Legislature have the backing of years of polling, saying voters want to buy wine in grocery stores.

But liquor stores have been against the idea, saying it would hurt their business.

The state representative who cast the key vote against the bill last session has since said he is now willing to reconsider.

Ramsey said negotiations are already underway to get the bill ready to pass.

"There are negotiations going on right now between the small store liquor store owners and others to make sure everybody is covered," said Ramsey. "It really is time for that bill to pass."

Lawmakers will reconvene for the 2014 legislative session in January.
