UPDATE: One dead after car accident in Wilmington, suspect charged with DWI

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A Wilmington man is dead after an accident near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road Thursday. 

According to the Wilmington Police Department, around 5:30 p.m. the driver of a green SUV was headed east on Independence Boulevard towards Shipyard Boulevard when a Jeep turned in front of the SUV and flipped over.

Police say John Jackson, Jr., 53, died in the crash. He was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Jeep.

Mark William Neil Estep, 39, of Wilmington was the driver of that vehicle. Estep is charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle. He is being held under a $30,000 secured bond. Estep is expected to make his first court appearance Friday.

Several other passengers involved in the crash were sent to the hospital with injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Emergency crews closed Independence Blvd. while the accident was being cleaned up.

This was the one of two fatal car accidents to happen on the same day in the Cape Fear area.
