FORT MILL, SC (WBTV) -

State Law Officials in South Carolina are sending a clear message to drivers this holiday season… Don't drive drunk or you're going to jail.

Thursday, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety officials announced their annual Sober or Slammer! Campaign will officially begin on Friday.

The announcement was held at the Flint Hill Fire Department in Fort Mill.

Sober or Slammer! is a statewide, multi-jurisdictional, high-visibility DUI enforcement and public information and education campaign.

The goal of the campaign is to reduce alcohol-related collisions, injuries and fatalities through a decrease in impaired driving.

Public Safety officials say impaired driving continues to be the most frequently committed violent crime in the state.

"358 lives were lost in 2012 because of bad decisions made by drunk drivers behind the wheel. This is unacceptable to us," said SCHP Troop 4 Commander Capt. Bobby Albert.

This enforcement effort will be coupled with a public education and information campaign about the severe consequences of a DUI arrest.
