BBB: Don't miss your layaway deadline!

Posted: Updated:

With two weeks till Christmas -- the countdown is on. Especially if you put any of your gifts on layaway. The deadline most retailers set is looming which is why the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers not to miss it.

"What we saw last year at this time was a lot of people contacting us, complaining about these fees," remember Tom Bartholemy of the Charlotte BBB. "And we had to point them back to their contract and say that's what they agreed to do."

A contract Bartholemy says everyone using layaway is required to sign. He says if you aren't paid in full over the next week or so, it may not be a Merry Christmas.

"There's cutoff dates in there that you have to meet," he said. "And if you don't meet them, they'll take them off of layaway and put it back into stock."

Geraldo Marchena has used layaway before and knows well the feeling of getting it out on time.

"They shouldn't have a deadline," he said. "There should be no deadline for layaway."

With retailers reporting more consumers using layaway this year, Bartholemy says you must read the fine print.

"If you miss a payment or especially on that final payment and final pickup, it can be pretty costly," he pointed out.

Added costs Marchena says most using layaway can't even afford in the first place.

"These people have families and they put the money that they do have on these gifts and then they lose them," he said.

Every retailer is different so be sure to review your contract to see when the deadline is.

WBTV has learned Walmart has extended it's deadline until December 16 but you will be charged a cancellation fee of 10 dollars if you don't pick up your layaway on time.
