The N.C. Department of Transportation will resume setting bridge beams and overhangs to convert the existing I-85/I-485 interchange in north Charlotte to a turbine interchange, the first of its kind in North Carolina.
This design utilizes smaller, single-span bridges and smaller columns, and is easier to maintain.
Crews will need to close I-85 South to safely perform the work. Beginning Tuesday night at 10 p.m., motorists will be detoured from I-85 South to I-485 (Exit 48), following an onsite detour back to I-85 South until 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Weather permitting, the closure will continue from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12.
The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2014.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
