Meck Co. Health Dept helping residents register for Health Care

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The Mecklenburg County Health Department is now accepting appointments to assist residents in registration for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also referred to as Obamacare.

Appointments can be made in Health Department locations at 249 Billingsley Road and 2845 Beatties Ford Road. You can also sign up for a time by calling the Health Department Appointment Line at 980-314-0950.  An operator will be available during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.

As a certified application counselor organization, the Health Department has trained counselors on hand to help guide the public through the new health insurance marketplace.  The marketplace is a way to find quality health coverage. It can help if you do not have coverage now, or if you have it but want to look at other options.  With one marketplace application, you can learn if you can get lower costs based on your income, compare your coverage options side-by-side, and enroll. The staff of counselors at the Health Department will help people understand, apply, and enroll for health coverage through the marketplace.

Eligible residents can choose from a variety of insurance plans offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and Coventry Health Care of the Carolinas.

The ACA open enrollment period runs from Oct. 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014.
