Hickory Police investigating break-in at jewelry store

Posted: Updated:

The alarms sounded just after 4:30 Wednesday morning at Bisanar Company Jewelers in downtown Hickory, and within minutes police officers were on the scene. The crooks, however, had already fled, leaving behind several smashed display cases, plenty of broken glass and empty cases where jewelery used to be displayed.

"It's devastating," said manager Lori Baker.

The thief or thieves broke in through a back door, then smashed three long display cases containing gold and estate jewelery. No total dollar figure was released but authorities believe the take to well over $10,000 dollars worth of jewelry.

Damage to the store was extensive as well but could have been much worse.  For one thing, said store officials, the most valuable jewelry was locked up in the safe. The other fortunate thing was  the alarm did sound as the break-in happened.

"It is a very audible alarm and we think that's what scared them away so quickly," said Baker. "It could have been a lot worse, actually."

Surveillance video from city cameras outside spotted a white or silver Chrysler 200 circling the area several times and just after the break-in, was seen speeding away from the area.

Police are hoping someone will have information about the car and call them. So far, they have no suspects and do not know how many people were involved and do not know what was used to smash the display glass.

There was no sign of blood inside the store, despite all the broken glass. That indicates that whoever was inside and smashing the cases wore gloves. Authoruties are trying to retrieve surveillance video from the store computers to see if those pictures will shed any new information on what happened.

Bisanar Company Jewelers has been in downtown Hickory since 1896. Lori Baker thinks it is the oldest continuously operated jewelery store in  North Carolina.
