The business of Christmas decorating

Posted: Updated:

Are you done with your holiday decorating?  Or have you even started? For professional decorators they can't wait. One professional Christmas decorator rolled up her sleeves to deck the halls all year long.

Melissa Joyner said Christmas decorating is her passion.

"It's got be personal, otherwise it would look like a store tree," said Joyner. And it's also her profession.

"We try to be very organized because it takes us less time to get in and get out."

The Lake Wylie home Joyner decorated was one of the few jobs she and her assistant Linda Almond  had left this season.

"A lot of people want their trees done before Thanksgiving," said Joyner.

She got started eight years ago in the business of Christmas decorating without really realizing it.

"I always loved to decorate just in general but I have an accounting background and that's what I did for years until we bought the garden center," said Joyner, "And we were just kind of thrown into Christmas."

They own the Southern Roots Garden Center in Belmont.

"It took me from a corporate job to flexibility to be home with my kids," said Joyner.

She's no longer a full-time accountant but that doesn't mean she's stopped crunching numbers.

"And we priced this particular job, we priced it in taking it down as well," said Joyner, "And a lot of customers don't want us to do that."

Joyner said she's worked on projects ranging in price from $500 to $10,000.

"We decorate pretty much everything," said Joyner. She was focused on turning two chandeliers into wreaths.

Joyner is there for the person who is intimidated by an empty tree and for those who can afford it.

If you still want the joy of decorating, Joyner said she encourages people all the time.

"Just try it," said Joyner, "Don't let it intimidate you. Because if you don't like how it turns out you can always take it down and try again. And I do that a lot."

She said it's all about smiling when you're done.

We spoke with other professional decorators and they will also customize a look for your home on a budget. If you have a budget, they recommend getting a consultation ahead of time.  And they say some people starting booking appointments in May.
