Freezing rain causes 65-car crash in Worcester

WORCESTER, MA (WSHM) -

Freezing rain caused some spinouts and crashes in the eastern-most parts of our area on Sunday morning, but the Pioneer Valley had nothing on what Central Massachusetts residents dealt with.

At about 7 a.m., the icy conditions caused a crash on Interstate 290 involving 65 cars and three tractor-trailers.

State police told CBS 3 that 35 to 40 people were taken to local hospitals, with two people suffering serious injuries.

One state police trooper who initially responded to the scene was also involved in the crash.

The pile-up shut down the interstate for several hours in both directions.

Police said it was reopened just before noon.
