Some in Huntersville neighborhood without water on Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

People in one Huntersville neighborhood said Thanksgiving wasn't quite the same without water. A water main break that started in the morning with some bubbling out of the ground turned into a gushing stream around dinner time.

Charlotte Mecklenburg utility crews were in Huntersville to get service back to about half a dozen homes. It was a busy day for them with water main breaks in Charlotte on Park Road and WT Harris Boulevard and then the water main break on Devonshire Drive in Huntersville.

"We were home. We just finished eating dinner, tried to wash the dishes, there's no water now," said Alison Dillworth.

When neighbors in Huntersville took a look outside there was a stream of water raining all over Devonshire Drive. But many of them say it didn't have to get that big. They noticed it in the morning.

"It was coming out pretty good," said Dillworth, "And the grass was popping up a little but we thought someone would have been here earlier today to see what they could do."

The homeowner who lives directly across the street from the broken water main said she called the city's 311 system and was told the Park Road water main break was the priority. She argued her home didn't have to be soaked in water for an hour if it was taken care of in the morning. She asked not to go on camera since she was without water all day, didn't take a shower this Thanksgiving and then bought 5 gallons of water to cook.

Dillworth said she wanted the water back to give the kids a bath before bed.

"It sure took them a long time to get here. We're in a drought," said Dillworth, "It should be a bit of a priority if you have a water main break. It just seemed crazy that nobody could get here today."

A woman said she called 311 at 7 o'clock in the morning. The crews on scene said they did not know about the water main break until around 6 o'clock at night. They said the cause of the broken main was an old rusty service clamp. They said water service would be back Thanksgiving night and ready to go for morning showers.
