Students react to armed robbery near VCU

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Charlie Parris is no stranger to Hancock Street. A Sophomore at VCU, he has lived here for the last year, so getting word of a man being robbed near his home is unsettling.

"We see more and more VCU police driving around and groups of kids and obviously this area is slowly gentrifying with the expansion of the university and everything so it seems like its becoming a rarer occurrence so when it does happen it is a little more shocking," Parris said.

The victim told police that two men approached him with handguns and they got away with his wallet on foot. Officers say before that one of the men opened the wallet and dumped the victim's Identification and credit cards. They also took his cell phone. Parris says crimes like these are why he takes precautions before going out.

"If I'm going anywhere alone I ride my bike but if I'm going to a party or something I always go with groups of friends and never walk around that late at night."

VCU senior Kelly Burnett has lived in the area most of her life. She sends this word of caution to fellow students and others who frequent the area.

"Don't walk down the alley, don't go out too late at night and if you know that you are in an area where things have happened before just think do I really need to go out this second," Kelly Burnett said.
