SPRINGFIELD TWP, OH (FOX19) -

A community comes together to grieve the loss of a local track star. Nineteen-year-old Vince Turnage was gunned down in a home invasion on Sunday morning.

Today the school held a candlelit vigil to remember the 2012 graduate.

He captured the attention of so many during his time at Mount Healthy high school, often times with his God-given athletic ability, but hundreds of students attended today's ceremony and say he was also just an outgoing, fun guy to be around.

"He was a good student, always knew what to do, never did nothing wrong," says Destiny Midell.

"He was a role model to me like a leader, kind of like a brother. Like, he was always there for me whenever I needed him and he always wanted me to try my hardest at track," explains Treana Walker.

Walker graduated and ran track with Turnage. He says he still can't believe his former classmate is gone.

"Even though when I thought it was a joke I started crying. So I called a couple of my friends to ask what was going on to see if it was true and when they confirmed it, I didn't know how to feel," adds Walker.

Walker says Turnage is one of the best athletes he's ever seen in person.

"He was so gifted that when he started, there was just no stopping him," explains Walker.

Turnage advanced to the state meet in four events and is the school record holder in the 200 meter dash. Walker says one of his favorite memories is from a track meet at Winton Woods. Turnage ran the 4x400 relay and made an incredible comeback.

"There was a hundred yard deficit, and he caught it all the way back up and then just completely won the race. It was amazing, it was a sight to see," recounts Walker.

Turnage continued his running career at the University of Akron last year competing in both indoor and outdoor events.

"I hope that they find justice and that his memory lives on," says Walker.

The Mount Healthy high school had grief counselors on hand to attend to any of the students. They'll continue to be available throughout the week.
