Hi everyone, this is Paul Cameron in the WBTV Newsroom.
At 11:00 tonight, a strange and upsetting story. A deputy sheriff happened across a shivering 10 or 11-year old child with his ankle handcuffed to a front porch and a dead chicken around his neck. This happened south of Monroe. The two adults who lived there, Dorian Lee Harper, 57, and Wanda Sue Larson, 57, were charged with Intentional Child Abuse - Inflicting Serious Injury, False Imprisonment, and Cruelty to Animals. As it turns out, Wanda Larson is currently employed as a supervisor with Union County Department of Social Services.
During this week's cold snap, we're seeing a spike in homeless people breaking into cars for a warmer place to sleep. David Spunt is talking to car owners who share similar stories.
Investigators now say they know what caused a fire at a dorm in Chapel Hill. They are convinced it started in a faulty light fixture which spread flames to the attic of Cobb Residence Hall. 400 students were displaced because of the smoke.
Smoke is a big problem for folks in Burke County. The Table Rock wildfire in Linville Gorge is blowing a plume for miles. Officials worry there may be what's called a "super fog" by morning. That's where smoke mixes with mountain fog to bring visibility to zero causing very dangerous driving conditions. The worst time-- between 7:00 and 9:00AM tomorrow.
The partial good news-- tonight's sprinkles may help douse some of the flames which authorities now say cover more than 2,700 acres.
