Third traffic lane opens along part of US 278

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry, drivers who travel down US-278 will notice a little extra room now.

But that's no reason to let your guard down.

A third lane of traffic going eastbound and westbound between Hwy. 170 down to Simmonsville Road is now open, but county officials are urging folks to still be mindful of the construction work.

This third lane of traffic along 278 will help ease traffic congestion as the holidays approach.

You'll still see plenty of orange cones as a warning not to speed down the highway.

On Oct. 23, South Carolina Highway Patrol said a driver hit a construction worker near Hampton Parkway after she ran off the road, lost control and hit a construction barrel.

The worker, Bobby Harris, died Monday, Nov. 11 at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah from severe head trauma.

State troopers charged the driver, Wendy Whalen, with driving too fast for conditions.

"The cones are still there because we don't want motorists to have a false sense that the job is complete, we really want people to realize that there are people still working and to be safe while driving down 278," said Joy Nelson, Beaufort County PIO.

DOT workers still need to add shoulder lanes and pave both sides of the Okatie River Bridge.

They plan to remove all of the orange cones by the first of the year.
