Sylvania Township fire station complete

Posted: Updated:

Fire Station Number One is now up and running in Sylvania Township, and the fire department says they are looking forward to a much nicer facility.

Bigger doors for their trucks, higher ceilings and a special room to eliminate carbon dioxide are just some of the perks of the new fire station. The department started taking calls at Fire Station Number One on Sunday.

"We've been increasing our run volume steadily," said Lieutenant Jeff Bennett. "[The new station] will make us more prepared and be able to respond quicker."

Firefighters said the old station was cramped, making it hard for them to live and work in it.

"Some people compared it to living in a museum," Bennett said. "Some thought it was cool, but if you have ever tried to live in an old building, it makes it very hard."

In 2008, the township approved funding for the renovation of the station through a 1.25 levy. The renovations went $40,000 over the estimated budget, costing more than $2 million, but Fire Chief Jeffrey Kowalski says he hopes the citizens understand.

"We were about 4 percent over our cost projection at this time, which in any governmental project, I think that the people will understand that you will have cost overrides," he said.

There will be an open house for residents to check out the new station on Sunday, Nov. 17 from 1-4 p.m. The chief says he hopes people will be happy with the final results.

"I think when people look at the station and see what they got for their money, they will be very pleased," he said.
