Waiting game for Carolina Beach mayoral candidates

Wilcox beat Lewis by seven votes for Carolina Beach Mayor. Wilcox beat Lewis by seven votes for Carolina Beach Mayor.

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Dan Wilcox has reclaimed a role on Carolina Beach's town council, and this time he's serving as mayor.

Wilcox beat incumbent Bob Lewis by a total of seven votes, according to Tuesday night's unofficial totals. Wilcox received 745 votes and Lewis received 738 votes.

The newly elected mayor served one term as a council member from 2007 to 2011. After that, Wilcox lost a bid for mayor to Ray Rothrock, who resigned from office about a year later.

Before his time as an elected leader, Wilcox organized volunteers to improve the town's boardwalk area with the appropriately named Boardwalk Makeover Group.

Wilcox will have to handle on-going issues facing the town of Carolina Beach like flood insurance because of the Biggerts-Waters Act and beach renourisnment as a coastal community.

At this time Lewis is not excluding the possibility of a recount. However, he says he hopes the divide in votes doesn't affect the community.

"50% of the voters want him and almost 50% of the voters want me. I don't like the fact that it's split the community down the middle. I'm hoping that's not something that's going to go forward," Lewis said. "I'm hoping everyone comes together and we just move forward. We've got a lot of great things planned for Carolina Beach and projects underway."

If Lewis wants a recount he will have to wait until next week. That's when the 16 provisional votes will be counted and the official total will be released. From there, Lewis will have to be within 14 votes or 10% of the total.
