Fort Mill Police searching for unknown child who vanished from local park

The Fort Mill Police Department is requesting the public's assistance locating an unknown female child, approximately 9 to 11 years of age.

At 9:54 a.m. Friday , the Fort Mill Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen who said he had encountered an unaccompanied female child in the playground area of Walter Elisha Park on Highway 160 in Fort Mill.

The man told officers the child was not dressed appropriately for the cold weather. He stated she was wearing only brown shorts, a pink shirt, and pink flip-flops with bows on them. She did not have a jacket or coat.

The man stated he approached the child and asked where her parents were, and she replied that she was staying with her grandfather as she looked in the direction of Sidney Johnson Street, adjacent to the park. He then offered his coat to the child, as a woman accompanied by two young boys approached them.  The man told the unknown woman he was going to his vehicle to get his phone and call the police, and the woman said she would stay with the child.

When officers arrived, they met the man in the parking lot. Upon returning to the playground area, they discovered the woman and children were gone and the man's camo coat he had given to the child was on the ground.

The man advised officers that a small van, dark blue in color, with a white enclosed rooftop luggage carrier, displaying a New Jersey license plate, had previously been parked nearby, and was now also gone from the area.

Additional officers responded and started a door-to-door search of the nearby area. When that was unsuccessful, officers contacted the York County Emergency Operations Center and requested a Reverse 911 call to area telephone number, advising the public of the circumstances and requesting additional information that could help in the investigation.

According to a media release from law enforcement,  no additional information has been received, and no report has been made with local law enforcement agencies in reference to a missing child.

Anyone with information should contact the Fort Mill Police Department, at 803-547-2022.
