WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Former Saturday Night Live writer and writer/producer of The Simpsons Joel H. Cohen will be among the judging panel for the 14th Annual Cape Fear Independent Film Festival.

Cohen has been awarded by his peers with both Emmy and Writers Guild Awards and will serve as a "special guest judge."

The festival will take place May 1-4, 2014 in Downtown Wilmington venues, including historic Thalian Hall and the Browncoat Theater.

The Cape Fear Independent Film Festival is the only competitive festival in the area and awards cash and prizes in a number of categories. This year, a new category, "The Don," has been added to honor Wilmington native Don Payne.

"The Don" award will be awarded to the "best produced independent feature screenplay," honoring a unique voice in screenwriting.

Payne began writing for television on the sitcom Hope and Gloria before becoming a writer and eventually producer on The Simpsons. Payne, who died from bone cancer in March 2013, also wrote several movies, including My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

Other judges on the panel include: Wilmington screenwriters and script analysts, Langley McArol, Terry Linehan, and Tammy Arnold, and Payne's old friend Carolyn Omine.
