CBJ: Publix sets plans for 11 Charlotte-area stores

CHARLOTTE, NC (Jennifer Thomas/Charlotte Business Journal) -

Publix Super Markets Inc. looks forward to being your favorite supermarket.

The Lakeland, Fla. grocery chain has plans to open 11 locations — a mix of new and remodeled sites — in the Charlotte region by the end of 2015.

The first of the 11 locations slated to open will be its Ballantyne Town Center store in early 2014.

But Publix has already started reaching out to potential customers to raise awareness that the grocer is coming to town. That includes mailing fliers and posting signs at some of its future locations.

"We hope they will come and try us and give us the opportunity to show them what we're all about," says Kim Reynolds, spokeswoman.

She notes Publix is focused on providing variety, freshness, quality and value when it comes to its product offerings, as well as excellent customer service. And, she adds, it has a flexible coupon policy and offers hundreds of dollars worth of buy one, get one free offers each week.

Its plans include four new stores and the remodeling of seven area Bi-Lo stores, which Publix has acquired. The Bi-Lo locations in Mecklenburg County and South Carolina have since closed.

"Our intent is to begin work and get those stores open as soon as possible," Reynolds says.

That list includes the following stores and potential opening dates:

Ballantyne Town Center, 11222 Providence Road West, Charlotte —early 2014

2186 Cherry Road, Rock Hill—early 2014

3110 Fincher Farm Road, Matthews — mid-2014

12810 York Road, Charlotte —late 2014

West Catawba and Jetton Road, Cornelius —late 2014

Mint Hill Commons, Matthews-Mint Hill Road and Lawyers Road — late 2014

Shops At Southline, South Boulevard and Iverson Way — early 2015

9815 Rose Commons Drive, Huntersville—early 2015

8120 S. Tryon St., Charlotte —mid-2015

158 Highway 274, Lake Wylie —late 2015

1735 Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill— late 2015

Those are in addition to the two Publix stores that are already operating in the Charlotte region, near Tega Cay and in Indian Land.

Reynolds says the grocer is finalizing plans to remodel and upgrade the Bi-Lo locations. In some cases, that may mean replacing the existing stores because of age, she adds.

On average, those stores will total about 49,000 square feet.

"This really was a natural fit. We knew we wanted to be in those neighborhoods serving those customers, so it was a perfect opportunity for us," Reynolds says.

Publix anticipates it will hire 100 to 150 employees per store — that's on par with its existing stores, Reynolds says.

The grocer operates 1,075 stores in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama. Its plans are to aggressively grow its presence in North Carolina, Reynolds says.

"It's just a natural extension of our geography," she adds.
