Veterans remembered in Chicopee ceremony

Oct. 23, 2013 will mark the 30th anniversary of a suicide bombing in Beirut that took the lives of 241 United States service members.

Nine of them were Marines from Massachusetts, and one of those Marines was Chicopee native Steven Lariviere.

On Saturday, a commemoration ceremony was held in front of a memorial bearing his name.

Officials said, at the time, the Beirut attack was the deadliest single attack on Americans since World War II.

Organizers of Saturday's event said it is important to remember the lives lost, including the ones who hits so close to home.

"It does mean a lot that days are recognized outside of the normal days, like Veterans Day and Memorial Day," said Military Order of the Purple Heart Commander Brian Willette. "This day is very special to all Americans, but especially the Marines."

Organizers said there will be a ceremony for the Marines on Sunday in Boston, followed by a ceremony in four days at Camp Lejeune, NC.
