Teen with Down Syndrome voted Homecoming Queen

In front of a stadium full of football fans, South Stanly High School crowned a new Homecoming Queen Friday night.

Laney Rinehart is a senior at the South Stanly. Before earning the title of queen, she was voted most friendly student. Now, the teen with Down Syndrome, is a queen.

School leaders tell WBTV Laney won in a landslide. She received 80% of the school vote.

They say Laney gained popularity though her involvement in school sports and other school activities.

Laney's father was at her side as the announcement was made.

"We never expected this at all, and these kids have been so wonderful to her. They have taken her in," Chip Rinehart told WBTV. "She has impressed me more than any person I have ever known in my entire life."

Principal Shawn Britt was there as the surprise announcement was made at halftime.
