CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The BBB will offer free shredding to individuals and small businesses on Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at two locations in Charlotte during its nationwide "Secure Your ID" Day.

The two locations will be in the IKEA parking lot, located at 8300 IKEA Blvd and the Community Link parking lot, located at 601 East 5th Street.

"It's not too late to clean out your desks and filing cabinets of all those old files to have them securely shredded tomorrow," said BBB President Tom Bartholomy. "Shredding personal documents is the easiest way to prevent identity theft."

"Identity theft is a crime that you may not know has occurred until months after you become a victim," Bartholomy added. "Then, it can take years to undo the damage that has been done by someone who obtained your personal information."

The event will be held rain or shine. Limit four large bags or boxes per car.

The BBB's record retention guide lists how long you should keep certain types of documents and what documents should be shredded.
