Airport Commission plans meeting, Orr sets retirement date

Posted: Updated:

As the future of Charlotte Douglas International Airport hangs in the balance of a state court decision, the Airport Commission is moving forward with plans to control the property.

Airport Commission members are planning their first meeting for November 7th, at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.

Attorney Richard Vinroot represents the Commission and its leader, Jerry Orr, in the court battle to take control of the airport away from the city. In a memo, Vinroot told Commissioners they are preparing a packet of helpful materials and working to set an agenda before the meeting.

In a separate memo, Orr told Commissioners he plans to retire in June of 2015, if they elect to allow his service until then.

Recently, a court order left the city in charge while the case is pending.

The Commission was created this summer by state lawmakers to become the governing authority over Charlotte Douglas. Orr was named to lead the Commission after spending decades overseeing operations as airport director.

This month, city leaders released a report questioning airport finances under Orr's leadership. City leaders say there is evidence that revenue connected to three properties was improperly reported to the FAA.
