Coroner: Man fatally shoots himself when stopped by deputy

CHESTER, SC (WBTV) -

Agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating after a man shot himself when stopped by a Chester County Sheriff's deputy.

According to the Chester County Coroner's Office, 25-year-old Maurice Jeter man shot himself when he was stopped by deputies on Friday morning.

Investigators say the incident began as an attempted vehicle stop on Saluda Road that ended at the residence along the 900-block of Shallowbrook Road.

The driver of the vehicle, Jeter,  was found in the vehicle deceased.

The coroner's office says he shot himself and his death is being ruled a suicide.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave while SLED investigates.
