Beatty lost his legs in the Iraq war and was awarded with a new home when he returned from combat. To return the favor, he founded Purple Heart Homes which builds homes for injured veterans.

Beatty will receive $50,000 as a part of the top 10 selection. He is also eligible to become CNN's Hero of the Year. That distinction carries a prize of $250,000.
