Deputies: Man trying to stop women claiming they have flat tires

NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Newberry County deputies are looking for a man they said is targeting women driving alone to tell them they have flat tires and he will fix them - when they don't.

Deputies said the first incident happened on Highway 219 last week.

The woman told deputies the man flagged her down to say she had a flat tire, but she continued on to a nearby Walmart to check her tires and they were OK. The man was driving a charcoal gray vehicle, but deputies said they were unable to get an additional description.

The second incident happened Thursday on Adelaide Street, deputies said.

The woman met an oncoming vehicle that braked and the driver rolled down his window partially to say flag her to stop, deputies said. When she rolled down her window, he told her, "You got a flat tire, I will help you change it," according to deputies.

The woman told deputies she was headed to school and would check her tire then. Deputies said she was also unable to get a make or model for the man's car, but said it was dark in color.

Deputies advise people to be alert and call the sheriff's office at 803-321-2222 if they have any information about the man.

If someone else has a similar experience, they're asked to call 911 immediately. Deputies said law enforcement needs to know about it while it's happening to help locate the suspect quickly.
