The Rowan County District Attorney has decided not to file charges against a man involved in the deadly shooting of a set of Rowan County cousins from July.
According to District Attorney Brandy Cook, criminal charges will not be filed in the deaths of Daniel and William Redman, from Cleveland. The cousins were found shot to death in a pick up truck in western Rowan County back in July.
Deputies were called to a home along the 1000-block of Mountain Road in Cleveland at about 10:10 p.m. on July 20 in response to a disturbance.
The caller told dispatchers several men were at the residence with guns and that shots had been fired.
About 10:25 p.m., dispatchers received another call from the 500-block of Hildebrand Road, about five miles away, saying two gunshot victims were there, located in an orange and black "Harley Davidson" edition Ford F-350 pick up truck.
Deputies arrived at the Hildebrand Road home and found William and Daniel Redman dead.
Cook says the cousins went to a Mountain Road home with three other people and someone from the truck fired on Roy Brooks, whose niece lived next door. That's when Brooks fired back.
"Brooks was on his own property and protecting himself," Cook said in a press release. "[Brooks was] not the aggressor and did not use excessive force."
Investigators said individuals in the truck were inconsistent and untruthful in interviews with law enforcement. Brooks and his wife reportedly warned the individuals to leave their property several times.
"It is tragic anytime there is a loss of life. However, in this investigation, the conduct of Roy Brooks is not inconsistent with the law of self-defense," Cook said.
