Wreck kills one teenager, injures two others

Investigators say speed was likely a factor in deadly crash on Lower Rocky River Road in Cabarrus County. No one wore a seatbelt, according to officials with the Highway Patrol.

16-year-old passenger Katelyn Ziglar was killed. Her two friends, Grant Lucas and Eric Fox, are recovering from injuries. Investigators say Lucas was driving.

All three attended Hickory Ridge High School. A few hours after the accident, student gathered to paint the school rock and leave flowers in Katelyn's memory.

The rock was painted blue with white letters, which read "God bless our Bulls, Katelyn, Grant, Eric."

Neighbor Alice Hill says the accident happened right outside her front door Friday evening. She said the curvy road needs a warning sign or guard rails.

"I think it's a sin, a crime that someone had to lose their life," said Hill, talking the need for better traffic control on Lower Rocky River Road.

Troopers have not said how fast Lucas was driving. They said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
