Crews searching for victims in Palestine fire

PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) -

Crews are searching for victims after a massive fire destroyed a building in downtown Palestine.

Numerous Anderson County fire departments responded to the fire, which erupted overnight Friday in the 100 block of East Oak Street.

The building is on the opposite side of the street from the historic Ivanhoe Building that partially collapsed in 2011.

According to the owner of the building, the first floor serves as a thrift shop and the upper floors are rented space. She said there were three people renting in the building. Two people were in the building sleeping at the time of the fire, and were able to make it out safely.

The Palestine fire chief says he believes there were four people in the building when the fire started. He says only two people are accounted for.

Dogs were brought in on Saturday to search for victims. The Palestine fire chief says the dogs did not pick up anything.

There are no reported injuries associated with the fire. However, one volunteer fire department crew was involved in a crash while responding to the fire.

Palestine Police confirm crews as far away as Jacksonville responded to assist crews with the fire.
