A 28-year-old Berkeley County Detention Center Officer is accused of punching an inmate in the face.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents arrested Thomas Justin Mims on Thursday and charged him with third-degree assault and battery.
An affidavit states the incident happened at the detention center on Aug. 19 at 4:55 a.m. Authorities say it started when Mims purposefully used his shoulder to shove an inmate in the back.
According to court records, Mims then pushed the inmate against the wall and punched him in the face.
Authorities say the incident was captured on video. Court records state the video along with witness statements showed that Mims force against the inmate "appeared unnecessary and excessive and constituted an assault."
Mims was locked up at the Berkeley County Detention Center. SLED conducted the investigation at the request of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.
