CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Searching for a job in a slumping economy is no easy task just ask Alfrika Williams.
"The industry that I previously worked in it went away. I was having a challenging time trying to transfer those job skills to other positions."
Alfrika found herself unemployed and when she did find job opportunities she couldn't afford to go on interviews.
"I had gained some weight at the time so I couldn't fit into my old interview clothes," said Alfrika.
"You sort of feel discouraged, a little distraught."
She came to Dress for Success when she was almost out of hope.
"Every one of them has their own back story," said Kerry Barr O'connor the Executive Director for Dress for Success.
"All the women want to secure employment, they want to achieve economic independence, they want to strengthen their families."
The organization gives women who qualify a complete interview outfit, dress shoes and head to toe accessories but it also helps prepare them for that all important face to face interview.
"The suit is often the first point of contact for a client but we may see a client 20 times in a year's time," said O'Connor.
Just weeks after she received the training she needed, Alfrika started a new job at a construction company and now volunteers with Dress for Success on community projects.
"We were able to create a recycling composting project for several senior homes throughout the city," said Alfrika.
Those skills helped to Alfrika develop her leadership skills so much so that her current job noticed and she was recently promoted.
"It was a very well rounded experience," added Alfrika.
