For the first time since 2002, Gardner-Webb is ranked in the Top 25 in the FCS poll in football.
GW is currently #25 after a 3-1 start where they have beaten top 15 teams in the last 2 weeks.
A big key has been the play of the defense. In the last 2 games, they gave up only 1 TD to Richmond and shut out Wofford this past Saturday. Gardner-Webb leads the Big South Conference in total defense and ranks 17th nationally in the same category.
The offense has held up it's end of the deal as well as they are 3rd in the nation in time of possession. Former Forest Hills star Juanne Blount is a big reason for that as he is averaging 105 yards rushing per game this season. Blount was named the Big South Offensive Player of the Week after GW win over Wofford this past Saturday.
The awards continue for Coach Carroll McCray's team as nose guard O.J. Le'iatua Mau was also named Defensive Player of the Week and former Marvin Ridge kicker Jordan Day was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
The 3-1 start for GW is the best since 2009 which was the last time this program enjoyed a winning season.
Saturday, the Runnin' Bulldogs host NAIA member Point University out of Georgia. Kickoff is set at 6 pm.
