Local Lowes' employees help kids in need

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - With thousands of students in Horry County on free or reduced lunch, meals can be sparse for families trying to make ends meet, especially on weekends and over long school breaks.

According to Lowes Associate Charles Collins, the "Help 4 Kids" program in Horry County distributes more than 2,300 meals every single week.

So he and his fellow employees at the Conway location of Lowes on Highway 501 decided to help make sure students have a meal to take home by creating an atmosphere of giving within the company.

Collins tells WMBF News, that over a 2 month period, more than 100 employees at Lowes opened up their hearts and their wallets to donate. When the count was complete, nearly 1,300 cans of Vienna Sausage, peanut butter and applesauce were collected for the canned food drive.

These employees at the Lowe's in Conway aren't done giving just yet. They've now started a coat and heavy clothing drive to help keep Horry County students warm during the winter months.

For more information on how your company or organization can give back to the "Help 4 Kids" Organization or to learn more about what they do, you can check out the website, http://help4kidssc.com/ or call 843-651-4310.

Collins urges other organizations and companies to step up and donate or create their own food/clothing drives because it's a year long need that never goes away.
