More meetings set for Bluffton, Lady's Island school changes - | WBTV Charlotte

Meetings will focus on Bluffton, Lady's Island school issues

Bluffton and Lady's Island residents have a chance to share feedback about school issues with the Beaufort County Board of Education in several meetings.

A town hall meeting is now going to be a public forum with Superintendent Jeff Moss at 6 p.m. on Sept. 26. Residents can talk with the school board about the increasing enrollment in Bluffton-area schools.

The town hall meeting is one of five being held in the district. When that meeting is over, there will be a Beaufort Co. Board of Education meeting, where Bluffton-area enrollment options can be discussed.

Parents have requested more meetings where they can provide feedback.

Three options have been proposed, according to a news release from the Beaufort County School District:

  • Building a new elementary school to serve grades K-8 and a new combination middle/high school to serve grades 6-12 in the Bluffton area. Parents would elect to send their students there because they would be schools of choice.
  • Reassigning middle and high school students in the Okatie area to Robert Smalls Middle School and Battery Creek High School, both located in Beaufort.
  • Adding a new wing to Bluffton High for 1,000 more students.

Another school board meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sept. 24 at the school district office at 2900 Mink Point Blvd. in Beaufort. Parents can talk about the Bluffton options, but the focus will be on bringing fifth-graders back to Lady's Island Elementary School.

Fifth-graders in the Lady's Island Elementary attendance zone currently attend Lady's Island Middle School.

The Lady's Island Elementary School Improvement Council voted last spring to ask the school board to make the school K-5 again, which would send fifth-graders to the elementary school.
