Upstate volunteer fire chief laid to rest Thursday

SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Seneca fire captain and volunteer fire chief who died when a tractor trailer plunged into Lake Hartwell was laid to rest Thursday with full firefighter honors.

David Wright's funeral was at 2 p.m. at Hepsibah Baptist Church on Friendship Road near Seneca. The funeral was open to the public.

Following the service, a procession incorporating local fire trucks and emergency services headed to the graveside service.

The procession started at the church to Walnut Street, then East South Sixth Street, to South Oak Street, to West South Fourth Street, to South Oak Street, to Wells Highway then to Highway 123 and then Highway 11, ending at Heritage Memorial Gardens.

Wright, 47, was driving an 18-wheeler for his father's business when it blew a tire and crashed into Lake Hartwell off of Highway 24 double bridges, killing him and injuring a passenger.

Wright was nearing retirement after serving 23 years with the Seneca Fire Department where he was a captain and was also proud to serve as chief for the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, daughter, parents and sister.
