A man is facing serious charges after turning himself into police, following a hit and run crash that killed one woman and injured four people in South Charlotte.

Police say four passengers, a woman and three children no older than three years of age, are at Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries Thursday morning.

18-year-old Uriel Eduardo Flores is in police custody, charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Felony Hit and Run.

Charlotte firefighters say the incident was first reported at 6:08 p.m. Wednesday night at Sharon Road West near Hopeton Road.

Video from Sky3 showed one vehicle, a red Mercury, crashed into a utility pole, killing the driver.

Witnesses and police sources told WBTV the car and a truck were seen racing down the road prior to the crash.

"There was a white truck in front of me. We were in the far left lane and all of a sudden he just started speeding," said eyewitness Melanie Sims.

Late Wednesday, police released a picture taken from a traffic camera at the corner of Sharon Road West and Hopeton Road. It showed the white truck and Mercury Sable side by side.

Police believe the truck driven by Flores played a role in the crash involving the sedan.

Witnesses to the crash say they ran over to the car to help the people inside of it.

"When I pulled up, all you could hear was the baby crying," witness Melanie Sims said.

Investigators say two children were in car seats and one was in a booster seat. None of them were properly installed and the child in the booster seat should have been in a regular car seat.

Police spent Wednesday night looking for a white Chevrolet dually pickup truck with an extended bed, black bed liner and silver running board.

At one point early Thursday morning, Uriel Flores turned himself into authorities.

The driver of the sedan killed in the crash has been identified as 19-year-old Shaquise Sharvelle Bush. Bush was going to celebrate her 20th birthday in just one week.

A 21-year-old passenger is in Carolinas Medical Center. A police source tells WBTV she is battling life-threatening injuries.

In a report issued Thursday morning, police revealed the ages of the children hurt in the crash are 18-months, 22-months and three years old.

Two of the children belong to the injured woman, police say.

Police say Bush and Flores did not know each other.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
