Jury: Officers in shooting were defending themselves

A jury says the two CPD officers who fired the shots that killed a 21-year-old Columbia man during a confrontation on Conveyor Street back in May did so in an effort to defend themselves and the safety of others.

The jury, which was brought together for an inquest by Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, made their decision Wednesday afternoon.

Watts called for the investigation into the death of 21-year-old Ajani Mitchell in order to reassure people the shooting had been handled in an open way.

Columbia Police confronted Mitchell back in May on Conveyor Street following a second phone call reporting he had a gun and was acting strangely.

Mitchell was hit about a dozen times.

The jury heard from several witnesses, including several CPD officers who were directly involved in the confrontation.
