Man shot by officer was wanted in North Carolina, had criminal history

A man who was fatally shot by a Richland County Sheriff's deputy was wanted on assault charges in North Carolina and was known to have several aliases, authorities said Wednesday.

The man, who's been identified as 39-year-old Mitchell Alanda St. Clair, Jr. was shot late Monday after a short chase near East Boundary Road and Faraway Drive.

St. Clair's family was located in Beaufort County, North Carolina on Wednesday.

St. Clair exited the vehicle and fired multiple shots at a deputy and the deputy returned fire, authorities said.

At the time of the shooting, St. Clair was carrying someone else's identification card.

Authorities said St. Clair has an "extensive criminal history."

SLED continues to investigate the incident.
