Fire causes extensive damage to Newport home

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -

Fire crews are investigating the cause of a multi-story house fire in Newport, Ky.

Crews were called to the 700 block of Maple Avenue just after 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. Initial reports indicated that the house's porch was on fire.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered that the fire extended beyond the porch and to the second and third floors of the home.

Both the Bellevue-Dayton and Covington Fire Departments were called to assist due to the complexity of the situation.

"Once it gets up in the attic of these older houses, it has plaster and lath," explains Newport Fire Chief, Gary Auffart. "It gets difficult to get through that. It's very labor intensive to try to pull the plaster and lath to get behind the wall where the fire really is".

Auffart says that the house sustained heavy damage to the second and third floors of the building.

Fire crews say that no firefighters were injured in the blaze. Auffart could not comment on the well-being of the residents.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
