Survivor Story: Bernadette Simpson

Bernadette's story

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A north Charlotte woman says having breast cancer helped her get over stage fright.... she now shouts from mountain tops about Komen Charlotte saving her life.

"I was unemployed when diagnosed," she says.  "I didn't have health insurance, I didn't know where to turn to get help

Bernadette Simpson was diagnosed with Stage two breast cancer at 42 years old. A lumpectomy, chemo, and radiation later, this now 47-year-old is cancer free.

Recently she had some other unnerving news:  A genetic test told her she tested positive for the breast cancer gene.

But her attitude is positive... and she wants you to know why Race for the Cure helps women just like her.

"I don't have a lot of things I focus on besides my child," she says, "so this time of year it's a big thing for me to give back to everybody else."
