Deputies: 81-yr-old man claims self-defense in fatal shooting

A man died after being shot in the neck by an 81-year-old man who told police he was being attacked, according to the Burke County Sheriff's Office.

Tuesday around 4:30 a.m., Burke County 911 received a call from the 81-year-old man, who said that he had shot Ronnie Gene Poole, 49, while Poole was assaulting him.

Deputies responded to the scene and found Poole, who had been shot in the upper part of his neck. Poole was taken by EMS to Grace Hospital in Morganton before being flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he later died.

The 81-year-old man told Detectives that Poole had said he was going to kill him, had kicked him in the head, and had choked him to the point of almost passing out, the official report states.

The man told Detectives that he was in fear for his life, and at that time had shot Poole in self-defense.

Deputies say charges have not been filed, but are pending while the Burke County District Attorney's Office reviews the case.
