Man breaks-in, steals prescription drugs from Clover pharmacy

Clover Police are searching for a man who broke into a pharmacy store over the weekend and stole several bottles of powerful prescription drugs.

"I feel violated," said MedCare pharmacist Elizabeth Girard.

That's the best way Girard can describe her emotions after the Bethel Street drug store was broken into late Saturday night.

In surveillance video, you can see a man break through a back door, head straight to a shelf and leave the same way he came.

Police say the man tried to get away with seven bottles of Alprazolam, but he dropped five of them as he made his way out the back door.

Alprazolam is a generic for Xanax

"It's highly addictive, highly abusive, and very dangerous. If they get into the wrong hands, enough of them can kill you," said Girard.

Girard tells WBTV what frustrates her furthermore is these types of crimes are becoming more prevalent and Clover Police agree.

Several pharmacies have been broken into or robbed in broad daylight in the past month in the South Carolina viewing area by thieves looking to get their next fix.

"It's a nationwide problem with prescription pills and prescription pill abuse. I think some of that may be indicative of, I would like to think, police making it more difficult to get other illicit drugs," said Lt. Tanner Davis with the Clover Police Department.

Lt. Davis says prescription drug addiction can be stopped and it could be as simple as cleaning out your medicine cabinet at home.

"Any young person or anyone wanting to get their hands on prescription pills can simply look into a family member's medicine cabinet and then the addiction is born. Once the addiction is born then they go to other means to fill it," said Lt. Davis.

Meanwhile, this pharmacist must continue to go about business as usual, although she admits it will be difficult.

"I'm very frustrated and I don't feel safe anymore. It doesn't feel like a safe environment to know that somebody can just come in here like that and take your property," said Girard.

Police don't have a good description of the suspect. He's a white male that was wearing a black hoodie and paintball mask over his face.

If you have any information in this case you are asked to call Clover police.
