87,000 gallons of wastewater spill into Charlotte creek

Utility officials say a broken 16-inch pipe is to blame for a big sewage spill in West Charlotte Saturday.

A spokesman for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities says the pipe burst on Barringer Drive, near Irwin Creek. Approximately 87,400 gallons of wastewater made its way into the water. CMUD says a crew diverted the waste away from the creek as soon as they were able.

CMUD says no fish died as result of the spill.
