Make a call, get 500 dollars and prevent a crime?

The recent spike in violence has Charlotte Mecklenburg Police asking for your help. All it takes is a simple phone call and you could get paid hundreds of dollars.

It's all through CMPD's Firearm by Felon program, the brainchild of Deputy Chief Vicki Foster.

"If you think someone is a convicted felon and his carrying a firearm, he or she, call us," she implored.

Started last spring -- she says getting help from the community this way is just as vital to curbing crime.

"Sometimes the community knows what we don't know," Foster said. "I know a lot of time, people think we know everything but we don't know all the time where guns are. We don't know that people are felons."

Those same felons are often the ones responsible for the violence. Foster says that phone call could help get them off the streets.

"A lot of times things are solved because somebody calls us," she said. "And they said, 'hey I have some information for you.' I mean without the community, we can't do over half of the stuff we do."

Thanks to the community, CMPD has seized 71 guns since last May. More than half of those -- 44 -- off the streets this year alone. Deputy Chief Foster says that's huge.

"Picking up the phone, giving us some information as well as being paid," she said. "It's a win-win situation."

Speaking of getting paid, CMPD will give you 500 dollars for reporting a felon has a gun. They've paid out more than 12 thousand dollars -- all from anonymous phone calls.

But they do need as much information as possible including where they live, their current location and a detailed clothing and physical description.

If you know of felon that may have a firearm, call 704-334-1600. Remember you don't have to leave your name.
