A Rowan County man who was wanted on several pending charges was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he bummed a cab ride from South Carolina.

Matthew Lee Carriker, of Rockwell, is charged with three counts of obtaining property by false pretense, failure to notify the department of motor vehicles of an address change, writing a simple worthless check and hiring with intent to defraud, according to the reports from the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the 1300 block of Oliver Road on Tuesday at 6:04 p.m.

Carriker had hired a taxi driver to take him from Columbia, South Carolina back to Rockwell. The cab fare for the ride was $330, according to the reports.

Carriker told the cab driver he had money for the ride to Rowan County and that his father would pay her for the fare when they arrived in Rockwell.

The driver told deputies that Carriker tried to use her cell phone while en route and even gave her a Visa debit card to pay for the fare.

Carriker said should could run the charge the next day since the card had a daily limit on it and that the driver could just mail the card back to him, according to the report.

When Carriker got out of the cab the driver drove away and called 911.

Deputies recognized the name and confirmed that Carriker had outstanding warrants for arrest.

They tried to run the card he gave the driver and it declined.

Deputies then drove back to the residence on Oliver Road to find Carriker.

The deputy recognized Carriker from his previous run-ins and when he got out of his patrol car said, "Welcome back you're under arrest."

Carriker was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,000 secured bond, according to the report.
